I have a 14 hour layover in Shanghi. Do I need a visa to leave the airport. If so, how much american dollars does it cost? I am American coming from Bangkok traveling to Los Angeles. If I do not get a visa can my friends in Shanghi come to the airport to visit me or do I have to stay in a restricted place?

If your transit time is no more than 48 hours, you could get out of the airport without any visa.
