About:Beijing Hutong

I am Urban Planner from University of Puerto Rico. Right now I am living in Texas, USA. When I was student, I went to China in 2007 for a summer class(one year before the Olympics). The class went to Beijing, at Dong Bei Yuan Hutong in the Qianmen Area. The goal for the class was to write an essay. At the time we wrote an essay about urban renewal in the old city. I will like how was the transformation of the neighborhood because the construction of the new line of the subway, and also I wanna know what happen with the people who live in the hutongs before.
Thank you

Hi, Jamie. I went there this May. Hutongs there are still exiting and people live there as usual. I stayed close to Xidan area, the west 2nd ring road. There are still lands and hutongs in that area. I think that is a problem for the city's Urban planning. Compared with the tall and modern buildings in CBD area of the eastern part of the city, those hutongs are in contrast but still regarded as an important part of the city's culture. More and more people call on good protection on hutongs. For people living in hutongs, they feel less comfortable than modern building for the facilities. Renovation on old hutongs is a nice idea I think.
