About:Chinese Embassy in Japan

Hi,
I'm an American travelling to Melbourne via Shanghai.
I already have booked my ticket Shanghai - Melbourne, but I have not booked any Tokyo-Shanghai flight.
If I book a TY-SH ticket to coincide with my existing flight (ie Tokyo-Shanghai Nov, 2 - Shanghai-Melbourne Nov, 2) would I still have to apply for a Chinese visa?
Does it matter that these two flights are with separate airlines?

Visas are not required of citizens of Australia who transit through Pudong Airport or Hongqiao Airport of Shanghai, provided they hold valid passports, visas for the onward countries, final destination tickets and have booked seats, and stay in Shanghai for less than 48 hours.
it doesn't matter the two flights are from separate arelines.
