About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the 240-hour pass while having a Q2 visa for business travel

I have a quick logistics question about entering China. I currently hold a valid 10-year Q2 (family visit) visa, but I’m traveling to Shanghai next month for a short business trip (under 10 days) and then flying to a third country (Singapore).

I want to use the 240-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) to save the entries on my Q2.

Has anyone successfully used the TWOV while having a valid visa in their passport recently?

-Does the Digital Arrival Card (NIA 12367) allow you to select 'Transit' if you have a visa? I noticed the option only appears if I leave the visa section blank.

-Any issues with Delta agents at check-in when they see the Q2 visa but I'm asking for TWOV?

Thanks in advance for any recent experiences!

Sophia, you can proceed with your intention to use 240 hour visa free transit, but I do not suggest you to do that. Why? Usually, those traveling on 240 hour visa free transit arrive in China without a Chinese visa. Those who enter with visa and still enjoy 240 hour visa free transit are those traveling on a single or double entry visas and they skip using a one of their entries in order to spend them at the later stage. Those with valid, multiple entry, 10 years long valid visas almost never use 240 hour visa free transits scheme.

If you are worried about your business meeting, you can proceed with it with absolute peace of mind because occasional business meetings, business visits and signing contracts or similar and similar are perfectly performed and understood, without any drama even with a visa that you currently have in your possession. You should not just emphasize that particular detail to airline/immigration officials. If I may, I would tell you that you are overthinking the situation.

The fact is that Delta check-in agents will be puzzled because it will be totally illogical that a person with such a visa is insisting on TWOV. In any case, they will let you board the plane without any doubt. Even better, you should not tell anything to Delta check-in agents because when they see your visa, they will not ask any additional question. The main detail here is Chinese immigration authorities because they will be even more puzzled. The fact is, your intention to use TWOV will draw more attention than performing some business meetings during your stay in China. I assure you that you will be asked many questions and eventually you will be allowed to enter the country and to exit it under 240 hour visa free transit, but you will leave a huge question mark why are you doing that.

The warm recommendation to you is to stick to your visa and just forget about TWOV option. You should definitely make your visit to China an easy and hassle free. Why would you make something so easy and easy to go, as something so complicated? No, you should not do that. However, if you decide to proceed with 240 hour visa free transit scheme, you can do that, but the experience will not be as if you have used your valid visa. I hope you will listen to the recommendation. Have a nice visit to China in any case.
