Clarification on Visa Requirements for My Shanghai–Japan Cruise

Hi there,

I hope you’re doing well. I’m reaching out because I want to make sure I fully understand the visa requirements for my upcoming trip, and I’d be really grateful if you could help me with a few clarifications.
Here are my complete travel details so you can see the full picture:

Fukuoka, Japan: April 28, 2026 — Docked 7:00 AM to 6:45 PM
Kumamoto, Japan: April 29, 2026 — Docked 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Return to China:
Shanghai (Baoshan): May 1, 2026 — Arrives at 6:00 AM

🛫 Flight Back to Manila:
Shanghai Pudong (PVG) → Manila (MNL)
Departure: May 2, 2026 at 1:35 AM

I’m a Philippine passport holder, and I want to make sure I follow the correct visa process. I understand that China has a 24‑hour transit rule for some travelers, and since both of my stays in Shanghai are under 24 hours each, I’m hoping to check if this rule might apply in my situation or if it only applies to certain types of transit passengers.

Since I’ll be:
Arriving in Shanghai, then boarding the cruise the same day, and
Returning to Shanghai after the cruise, then catching my flight home within the same 24‑hour window,

I just want to confirm whether the 24‑hour transit without visa option is possible for someone in my itinerary, or if I should still apply for a standard Tourist (L) Visa.

It would mean a lot if you could help clarify:

Whether my cruise is part of any visa‑free cruise arrangement, and
Whether the 24‑hour rule applies to cases like mine, or
If I should go ahead and secure a visa before my trip.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and guide me. I really appreciate your help, and I just want to make sure everything is sorted so I can travel without any problems.

Best regards,

Alex

Alex, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai - twice. You have perfectly understood the essence of the visa free transit scheme and you can proceed with your travel plane with absolute peace of mind. It is perfectly fine to use 24 hour visa free transit when arriving in China by plane and departing by ship and also by arriving in China by ship and departing by plane. Here is the procedure you will perform upon your arrival in China being it by plane or by ship:

- You are advised to have your flight tickets and cruise vouchers as printouts or at least as good screenshots
- Upon landing/docking in Shanghai you will fill out arrival card and tick transit in the appropriate box
- Perform fingerprinting at automatic fingerprinting machine
- Approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will present your flight tickets/cruise vouchers, your arrival card and fingerprinting receipt
- You will receive a temporary entry permit in your passport
- You will cross the immigration
- You will collect your luggage
- Head to the city or to the hotel of your choice
- When the time comes, you will cross the immigration at the airport/cruise port for your flight/cruise out of China.

Have a wonderful journey.
