Emily, your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. However, if you want to exit the airport, you will have to apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing in Chengdu. Here are the procedures you will perform in the exact sequence:
- You are advised to have your flight tickets as printouts or at least as good screenshots
- Upon landing in Chengdu you will fill out arrival card and tick transit in the appropriate box
- Perform fingerprinting at automatic fingerprinting machine
- Approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will present your flight tickets, your arrival card and fingerprinting receipt
- You will receive a temporary entry permit in your passport
- You will cross the immigration
- You will not collect your luggage because if you travel on a single ticket, your luggage will be tagged all the way to Hanoi
- Head to the city or to the hotel of your choice without a luggage
- When the time comes, you will cross the immigration and head to the gate for your flight to Hanoi.
You have to be aware that the issuing of the temporary entry permit is not your right, but a bonus offered to those with long layovers. In other words, there is a slim chance that you are rejected and in that case you will remain at the transit area (airside) of Chengdu airport. Hopefully, you will be successful and enjoy a good night rest. Have a nice journey.
