About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

question about visa free transit 10 days

Hi,
If I have a flight Bali to Beijing, long hours transit in Shanghai overnight and need to collect bagage and re-checkin, so it means I have to apply 240h visa free in Shanghai?
I will stay in Beijing 1 weeks and then go to Russia.

Second option:
Flight Bali to Moscow, long hours transit in Shanghai, and need to collect bagage and re-checkin, should I apply for 240h visa free also? Or there is another option? As I know, if we must collect bagage so we must pass thru the immigration

Thanks
Henry

Let's see what we have about your first option. If I have properly understood, your flight itinerary is:

Bali - Shanghai (first landing in China, longer layover) - Beijing (stay for 1 week) - Russia

Your itinerary is definitely and undoubtedly eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. It is allowed to cross the mainland Chinese provincial borders when traveling on 240 hour visa free transit. So, upon your landing in Shanghai you will perform all your entry formalities there because they are always done at the first point of landing. Upon your landing you will fill out arrival card, perform fingerprinting and the n approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets. It is highly recommended that you have your exit flight ticket (the one to Russia) printed out and ready to be presented to relevant authorities. You will be asked to present it in both Bali at the time of your check-in and also upon your landing in Shanghai. When your temporary entry permit is granted, you will head to the immigration because your flight to Beijing is purely a domestic flight. Also, you will have to collect your luggage and perform a new check-in for yourselves and your luggage.

You will then head to the gate for your flight to Beijing or you will explore the city if the layover is really a very long one. This is something you will decide based on your available time. In any case, your itinerary is definitely eligible and I wish you a wonderful journey.

As far as your second option is concerned, here we have:

Bali - Shanghai - Moscow

Since you have clearly stated that you will have to collect your luggage and perform new check-in, it will require the same procedure as I have already presented in your first option. The only tiny difference, although negligible, will be in the name of your visa free transit scheme. So, if your total transit time in Shanghai will be shorter than 24 hours (calculated from your scheduled arrival and until your scheduled departure), you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit, but if that layover (transit time) is longer than 24 hours, it will be 240 hour visa free transit.

Regardless whether it is 24 or 240 hour visa free transit you do not need any kind of visa and you will perform the same procedures, including a receiving of a temporary entry permit that will allow you to enter China in order to perform all the necessary formalities. In case if your layover is a long one, especially during the night, you will book a hotel accommodation. So, when filling out arrival card you will see a question, your address in China. You will not look for the actual address, but you will just write it down the name of your hotel there.

As you can see, the formalities in both cases are practically the same and the difference can appear just in the name of your visa free transit scheme (24 or 240) based on the length of your layover. Whichever option you decide to take, I wish you a wonderful journey.

One more detail, seeing now that you have Slavic surname... If you have Russian citizenship, then you do not have to bother yourself with visa free transit schemes and similar stuff because Russian citizens can enter, stay, transit and explore China for up to 30 days absolutely visa free. In other words, you do not have to bother yourself about visa free transit rules and you can enter China from one country and then return back to that country. Again, this is valid if you travel on a Russian passport, of course.
