Under the assumption that you are UK citizens, your best option is to use 240 hour visa free transit. Taking Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival does not have a value for you since it covers only Shenzhen city area and you are not allowed to travel beyond Shenzhen city limits. So, 240 hour visa free transit is the way to go.
It is important to understand that in order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit you will have to introduce a third country/territory into your itinerary and here is my recommendation:
- Take a ferry from Hong Kong to Macau.
- Take a ferry from Macau to Shekou in Shenzhen, but you will not apply for a Shenzhen 5 day VOA, but for a temporary entry permit under 240 hour visa free transit
- Before your departure from Macau to Shekou in Shenzhen, your family members who plan to return to Hong Kong after 3 days will buy their ferry tickets from Zhongshan to Hong Kong (operated by CKS) and you will buy your train ticket from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. This detail is essential because you will be asked to present your exit tickets from mainland China to Hong Kong (your family members from Zhongshan to Hong Kong and you from Guangzhou to Hong Kong) in both Macau and upon your arrival in Shekou.
- Like this you will be formally in a transit through mainland China on the route: Macau - mainland China - Hong Kong. This is perfectly eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, but you should just follow the steps I have explained. If you ask why Macau, the answer is simple, in order to enjoy 240 hour visa free transit you have to have your immediate points before and after mainland China located in two different countries or eligible territories and here you have Macau and Hong Kong as your immediate points.
