John, will take a MTR train to Lo Wu. When you arrive there, you will tell to Hong Kong authorities that you go for a visit to Shenzhen that you will obtain a Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival on the mainland Chinese side. You will walk to Luohu (mainland China border crossing counterpart of Lo Wu) where you will apply for that visa that costs quite affordable 130 CNY and you can pay it by your debit, credit card and WeChat as well. Cash is not accepted. Also, you will take your photo there for free and fill out the relevant form. If asked about your accommodation, you will say that you plan just a day visit/trip. If you plan to have an overnight(s) there, you should just book that overnight(s) and have a name and the address of that accommodation because you will be asked about it. When you receive a visa, you will proceed to Shenzhen. When your visit is over, you will return back to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing and also any mean of transport, high speed train included. Have a nice visit to Shenzhen.
