About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Valid route?

If this OK: UK - Beijing - Xi’an - Changsha - Hong Kong - UK?

Does it matter if the flight out of China is direct, or have a stopover?

E.g., could I book a Changsha to London flight with a stopover in Hong Kong, and still be eligible for 244-hour policy? Or, would I need to book a Changsha-Hong Kong flight, and then a separate Hong Kong-UK flight? Thanks!

Josh, it is clear that your itinerary is eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and the nature of the ticket itself is irrelevant. The relevant and essential detail is that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, your itinerary has exactly that, the immediate points are really in two countries / eligible territories i.e. UK and Hong Kong. This is all that matters and it is irrelevant whether your ticket will be a single one: Changsha with a stopover in Hong Kong or two single tickets for the same route. The essence is achieved in either way, your immediate point after mainland China is different than the immediate point before mainland China. If you want you can also take a high speed train directly from Changsha to Hong Kong West Kowloon station. This is useful if you plan to spend some time in Hong Kong after your stay in mainland China. In the case of taking a train, you will have to buy your train ticket even before you depart from UK because you will be asked to present it in both UK (at the time of your check-in) and upon landing in Beijing. In reality, the treatment is the same as if you travel to Hong Kong by plane. This is all that matters. Have a nice visit to China.
