About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Route eligible?

Hello,

I was wondering if this route would be eligible for the transit visa: Canada > Korea > China > Canada. I will have a layover in Japan on my way back to Canada. I've been reading that the home country doesn't count as the third country. Are you able to please confirm if this is true?

Thank you.

Vivi, under the condition that you have presented your itinerary correctly and with all the stops, your itinerary is definitely and undeniably eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) and here it does not matter whether the immediate point is your home country or any other country. The requirement is just two different countries as immediate points before and after mainland China and that is all. Strictly speaking, the immediate countries in your case are South Korea (before mainland China) and Japan (after mainland China). It would have been fine even if your flight from mainland China to Canada was a nonstop (direct) one because your home country can be a third country, of course. In any case, since your immediate country before mainland China is Japan it is totally the same whether your immediate country after mainland China is Japan or Canada. Have a nice visit to China.
