About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I eligible for the 240 hour visa on arrival?

Hello,

Traveling from US > Japan > Beijing (arrival) - Shanghai (departure) > Japan.
Also have option to go from US > Japan > Korea (layover) > Beijing (arrival) - Shanghai (departure) > Japan.

Your first itinerary is not eligible, but the second one is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. The central point of 240 hour visa free transit clearly requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China (regardless of their nature, very short or very long) have to be in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

As you can see, your first itinerary has its both immediate points in just one country - Japan making it ineligible, but your second one has its immediate points in two different countries - Korea and Japan. It does not matter if your stop in Korea is just a short layover. It is important that the immediate points are located in different countries / eligible territories and that is the case with your second itinerary. Have a nice visit to China.
