Travelling from HK to Shenzhen then Shanghai to Japan using 240h visa

I am wanting to travel to Shenzhen from HK via the train service, and then travel from there to Shanghai to get a flight to Japan. Can the 240 hour visa be used from HK to Shenzhen at the station? or is the visa only valid for flights. I have a UK passport and intend on staying less than 10 days in mainland China

Your route HK - China Mainland - Japan is an eligible route. But you cannot take a train to apply for the 240h visa-free transit. You need to take a ferry to Shekou Port to apply there.
