About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Using Taiwan AND Hong Kong as countries A & B.

I'm planning a trip and will go from Bangkok > Taiwan (7 nights) > Shanghai (6 nights) > Hong Kong (4 nights) > Tokyo, and I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for the 240 hr visa. There's a lot of confusion about whether Hong Kong and Taiwan qualify as a 3rd regions for onward travel. On one site, it specifically says Hong Kong > Shanghai > Hong Kong is not ok because Hong Kong is part of China, but the problem wtih that seems more like A > China > A instead of A > China > B. Thanks.

Your itinerary is definitely and undoubtedly eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau are eligible territories in this regard and you can use them for this purpose. Those telling that they are not eligible are just guessing and then presenting their opinions as facts. In reality they just create confusion while the reality is quite the opposite. Those 3 territories have been eligible for different types of visa free transit for many years. It is true that Hong Kong - mainland China - Hong Kong is not eligible in the same way as it would not be eligible to fly Thailand - mainland China - Thailand. The basic requirement is that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories. So, your intention to use two different territories, Taiwan and Hong Kong is perfectly eligible and you will realize it during your planned journey. I wish you a nice visit to China.
