Once the visa is issued how long is it valid before entering China

I am departing UK on 18th February and travelling around Asia before entering China on 10th May for a 29 day tour. What type of visa should I buy and how soon in advance can I get my visa to ensure it is still valid when I enter China on 10th May.

A tourist visa (L) is OK. Usually, its validity is 3 months, 6 months, etc. You can write clearly in your visa application that you need a 6-month one to ensure a long enough validity.
