About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA -> Bangkok -> Beijing -> Bangkok -> USA

looking up roundtrip tickets its cheaper for me to fly into bangkok then beijing from austin. meeting my wife in beijing, yanjiao, suburb of beijing. plan to stay a week there then fly together to bangkok to travel thailand for another week or so then travel back to the US together. would this qualify for the 240 hour pass through visa?

No, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. The reason is simple. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, your both immediate points are located in a single country - Thailand. This is, obviously, not eligible. In order to create your itinerary as an eligible one you will have to insert a third country or eligible territory, so your itinerary could look like: Bangkok - Beijing - Hong Kong - Bangkok or Bangkok - Beijing - South Korea - Bangkok. You should be somewhat creative and make your itinerary eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Hopefully, you will be able to do that.
