You do not need a visa definitely because you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit. This is the first and the most important detail. During your check-in in Japan you will declare that you fly from Japan to Bangkok via China (Shanghai) using 24 hour visa free transit. At the same time you will present your flight ticket from Shanghai to Bangkok. After a short check, you will be allowed to board the plane. Upon your landing in Shanghai you will do the following in the exact order: you will fill out the arrival card and you will tick the box on the arrival card where it is written - transit, you will then perform automatic fingerprinting, after this you will approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit because you simply have to formally enter China because you will have to collect / re-check your luggage for the next flight, this temporary entry permit is free of any charge and at the counter you will present your flight tickets. After a short check, you will be granted a temporary entry permit and after this you will head to the immigration. When you are done with the immigration, you will collect your luggage and proceed through customs to the check-in counter of your flight to Bangkok. After a check-in is performed, just proceed toward the exit immigration and finally to the gate for your flight to Bangkok. You will be fine, so just be relaxed and enjoy your journey.
