About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK transitting Beijing for 20h wanting to leave airport

I have booked to fly from London-Beijing-Auckland with a 20 hour layover in Beijing. We want to be able to leave the airport during this time to sight see. My partner has a British passport, I see that the standard 24h or under transit means he can't leave the airport, but is it true that permission to leave the airport for this purpose and time limit can be applied for at the airport? I see it under 24-hour visa-free entry permit, but unsure if this is legit or how it works exactly? I have a New Zealand passport so think I am eligble regardless for visa-free entry for this period. Thanks!!!

Emily, the citizen of New Zealand can enter China visa free for up to 30 days and she/he can exit the airport without that temporary entry permit and 24 hour visa free transit stuff. The citizen of UK has to fulfill the following... Upon landing in Beijing, the first thing that she/he will do is to approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where she/he will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting flight tickets and an accommodation bookings if there is a plan to sleep in the hotel during the night. After a short check, she/he will be granted a temporary entry permit and the she/he will head to the immigration and finally to the city to enjoy that layover time in sightseeing and/or resting in the hotel. You have to be aware that the issuing of a temporary entry permit is not a passenger's right, but a gesture of good will by the Chinese immigration authorities. In any case I would say that your chances to be granted a permit are very good since your layover is really a very long one. I wish you a nice, although short, visit to Beijing.
