About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US citizen Hanoi-Haikou-Hanoi

We are planning a short (less than 10 days) visit to Sanya. Our flight itinerary is Hanoi-Guangzhou (transfer)-Haikou. Then, bus to Sanya. The return would be the opposite itinerary. Another option is from Guangzhou direct to Sanya; same return. Would we apply for the 240 hr. Visa-Free Transit at our final destination (Haikou/Sanya airport) or at our transfer airport Guangzhou? This trip is planned for March, 2026

Rick, here the key problem is in the fact that your itinerary is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit because it is not in line with the basic rule of this visa free transit scheme. The very basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit scheme requires that the immediate points before and after your mainland China visit have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, in your case, both of your immediate points are in just one country - Vietnam. In order to make your itinerary eligible you will have to introduce a third country/territory in order to make your itinerary eligible. For example something like Hanoi - Guangzhou - Hainan island - Guangzhou - Hong Kong (by train from Guangzhou) - Hanoi. Like this you would have your immediate points in Vietnam and Hong Kong. There are more options, you can use your imagination and creativity, but you should remember that the immediate points in two different countries or eligible territories are an essence of your eligibility for 240 hour visa free transit scheme.
