About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK-Tokyo-Tokyo_Shanghai- Shanghai - Tokyo- Tokyo- London

Hello,
My planned trip is flying London to Tokyo for 1 week, then want to visit Shanghai as part of the trip, so flying Tokyo to Shanghai and return Shanghai to Tokyo 5 days/ 4nights in Shanghai total, then fly from Tokyo to London.
Please kindly advise if this legs qualifies for the 240 hours Point A - China- Point B . So for us our Point A will be Tokyo and Point B also Tokyo.

Many thanks
Ronnie

No, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for any visa free transit scheme. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit clearly requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). You can see that your itinerary has both immediate points in one country - Japan. If you want to retain this itinerary you will have to apply for a Chinese visa in advance. I would advise you to try to alter/adapt your itinerary in the way to insert some third country within it. For example, Tokyo - Seoul - Shanghai - Tokyo. Like this, the immediate points would be in two different countries - South Korea and Japan and you would be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Whatever you decide, I wish you a pleasant journey.
