Robert, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme. The very basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit scheme is that the immediate points before and after your mainland China visit have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, both of your immediate points are in Bangkok (Thailand). In other words your itinerary is not a transit, but a round trip to mainland China. If you only can, I would advise you to alter/adapt your itinerary to be eligible by introducing a third entity within your itinerary. For example, you could think about introducing Hong Kong, so to make your itinerary to look like US - Bangkok - Shanghai - Beijing - Hong Kong (addition to make your itinerary eligible) - Bangkok - US. If you introduce Hong Kong, your itinerary will become eligible regardless how much time will you spend there. I wish you a pleasant journey.
