About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Bangkok-Kunming-Bangkok

I assume it is not possible to return to the same country from which you entered China. Is that correct? Can I fly Bangkok to Kunming then Kunming to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) instead?

Yes, you are right and yes you can fly to Kunming from Bangkok then to Malaysia to take advantage of the 240h visa free transit.
