Us citizen flying into Hong Kong and visiting Shenzhen

If I'm flying into Hong Kong from US and I want to visit Shenzhen for one day using a train, would I need a visa if the plan would be to go back to Hong Kong the same day?

Yes, you need. There is a simpler way: get a Shenzhen visa on arrival at Luohu (MTR to Lo Wu), Shekou (ferry to Shekou), or Huanggang Port (MTR to Lok Ma Chau) at a cost of CNY 130.
