Shenzhen visa free transit policy

I am a U.S. passport holder traveling from the U.S. to Shenzhen. My current plan is to arrive in Hong Kong the day before and take the train into Shenzhen where I will stay for under 72 hours and depart for Singapore. Would the visa free transit policy apply to this situation? If not, can I apply for a visa at arrival or should I obtain a visa before arriving to HK?

To use the visa free transit (now 72/144 hour free transit has been upgraded to 240 hours, 10 days), you need to take a ferry from HK to Shenzhen as West Kowloon high speed rail station is not the eligible port, then fly to a third country, in your case, Singapore. So HK - ferry to SZ - Singapore is the perfect eligible transit.

Thank you. To confirm, arriving at Shekou Port via ferry (from HK) makes me eligible for the free transit and hence no need to apply for a visa?
