About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA Citizen - visiting Tokyo and want to go to China on way home to USA (240 hr. Visa Free Transit)

Hi Borut,
I will be visiting Tokyo. I would like to leave April 26th from Tokyo to Shanghai (PVG) arrive 22:15 and fly from Shanghai (PVG) to Beijing (PEK) and stay until March 5th, leaving Beijing (PEK) at 14:20. Would this work for the 240 hour visa? I don't think my 240 hours starts until 0:00 of April 27th -- ends until 23:59 of March 5th, is that correct? Also, while in Shanghai, can I go to Chongqing for a 1 1/2 day trip on a train. Thank you in advance.

You can do all that you have written, but one detail you have to accomplish to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. As far as you know, in order to enjoy 240 hour visa free transit scheme, the immediate points before and after your visit to China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In other words, if you depart from Japan to China, your immediate point after China cannot be Japan, but some other country or eligible territory. You can fly directly to US or to any other country/territory, but not to Japan. If you arrive in China on April 26th, the counting of your available days starts at 00:00 on April 27 and you are allowed to stay in China until May 6 at 23:59. The hours you have spend on the day of your arrival are not counted against 240 hours that you are allowed to stay in China. During your stay you can travel by train or plane or bus domestically and you can visit all the places you have emphasized in your post. By the way, it would be better to take a plane on Shanghai to Chongqing route because a train takes at least 10 hours. Plane tickets are usually cheaper and at quite similar price to those of trains roughly 3 weeks before your intended day of travel. You should be aware that you plan to be in China during the May Day long holiday, so you can expect somewhat bigger competition for plane/train tickets than usual. Have a nice visit to China.
