About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Eligible route?

Thanks for the great post! Can I confirm, if we were to travel from UK to Hong Kong >then HK to Zhuhai >and Zhuhai to HK - that wouldn't qualify??

What if we do UK to HK>then HK to Zhuhai >and Zhuhai to Macau? Would that then qualify for this transit? the Zhuhai trip is likely to be 2 nights and Macau for another night before returning to HK. Therefore Country A would be HK, and country B would be Macau - which seems to satisfy the visa free requirements?

Is there any restrictions on the type of transport used? E.g. if we were to travel via coach for both HK to Zhuhai & Macau to HK?

Part 1:

Helen, you can use 240 hour visa free transit, but it will not be so easy, unfortunately.

It is important to understand that 240 hour visa free transit is only available if you take a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen or Nansha port in Guangzhou. Every other option in non eligible.

When you arrive in Shekou or Nansha you can travel within the major part of China as you wish and after 240 hours, you can travel to Macau to fulfill the requirements of the 240 hour visa free transit scheme.

Here, it is essential to understand that although you could in theory take a coach to Macau, you will soon realize that it will be very hard or next to impossible to buy a coach ticket on a through line from mainland China to Macau. Please, have in mind, any option with a bus change at the border is not eligible. Also, you have to produce that ticket even before you depart from Hong Kong.

The real solution is to rely on Shekou to Macau ferry. I know, it is quite inconvenient geography wise, but it is practically inevitable. In this case you will be able to buy your ferry ticket through TurboJet ferry website. Also, you will have to print out that ticket even before your departure from Hong Kong and to have it at hand because it will be a proof of your transit intention. In the end, you will really have to take exactly that ferry you have bought your ticket for.

Part 2:

In reality, I would say that the most convenient in your case is Zhuhai 3 days visa on arrival. This visa comes with the cost of 130 CNY per person and you are free to choose the way how will you travel to Zhuhai and also how and when you will leave it. The only drawback to this option is the fact that you are in this way limited to Zhuhai city limits. Also, you should be aware that you have to arrive at the border crossing well before 16:30 when the visa offices close.
