Extending stay in China

Booked trip to Beijing and staying for 5 days - didn't realise the new extension to 240 hrs until I saw it on my passport - I was supposed to leave tomorrow but I now want to extend further to use the 240 hrs - if I change my return flight - will I be able to stay a further 5 days and who would I need to inform/get permission from? My hotel has availability - do I need to book extra days at the hotel and change flights first to show them (bit of a risk if they say no)

The first and the most important detail is to visit the closest PSB (Public Security Bureau that acts as a police station) and to present your intention there. I am more than certain that they will grant you a permission to extend your stay in China, but you should really receive that permission in order to make your stay longer. You should definitely not book anything as far as the hotel is concerned before you receive the said permission. I hope you will be successful and I wish you a longer stay in Beijing than previously planned.
