Let me see if I have properly understood you:

- You will travel to Taiwan
- After Taiwan you will travel to Hong Kong
- After Hong Kong you will enter mainland China via Shenzhen
- After 4 days in Shenzhen/Guangzhou you will travel to Vietnam

If I have properly understood you, here are the answers:

- Between Taiwan and Hong Kong you travel visa free because UK citizens do not need a visa for both
- From Hong Kong you will take a direct ferry, preferably in the morning hours to Shekou port in Shenzhen. The alternative is to take a direct ferry to Nansha port located south from Guangzhou. So, those are two eligible ports of entry if you want to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit valid for entire Guangdong province. Here just forget Shenzhen 5 days visa on arrival because that one is limited to Shenzhen city limits only.
- Before your departure from Hong Kong to either Shekou or Nansha ports, you will have to have a flight ticket to Vietanm ready to be presented as a proof that you will be really in a transit. Remember, you will always repeat that your intention is to travel via mainland China to Vietnam using 144 hour visa free transit.
- When the time comes, you will take a plane from Guangzhou to Vietnam using your ticket that you have presented as a proof of your 144 hour visa free transit.

In this way, you can do exactly what you have planned to do. I just hope I have properly understood you.
