Yes, you are formally eligible, but you should be aware that since recently the citizens of South Africa had relatively poor success of visa approval. However, starting from this year the approach of the Chinese border officials has been somewhat relaxed, so I am more than certain that your chances to be granted a Shenzhen VOA are currently very good. You are advised to arrive at Luohu (Lo Wu) border early in the morning to avoid potential long queues.

Thank you Borut. Just an update of my experience. South Africans cannot apply for the 5-day visa in Hong Kong to enter China mainland. At Lo Wu we were abruptly rejected and being told to go to the China Visa Centre and Wan Chai. I was fortunate to meet a visa consultant who assisted me at a reasonable fee and received my 30 day China single entry visa within 1 day. I had no problems entering China through the Lo Wu border the same day

I am really sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience. Your experience now represents a new guideline for our future suggestions until we receive a brand new successful case of some South African citizen. In the end, I am happy that you have managed to obtain a full Chinese visa within a very reasonable time frame and I can only wish you a pleasant and meaningful stay in China. Thank you for your kind feedback and all the best to you in your future travels.
