This is not an easy question to answer. Things are not settled down yet I think.
During peak of China 's zero COVID policy, Beijing City implemented real name policy for all of public transportation. After China's reopening, Beijing City never lifted that real name policy for public transportation.
So much confusion happened. Foreign temporary visitors and Chinese elderly had some difficulties.
On late March of this year, Chinese media picked up this. Beijing City decided to implement real name policy for all.
Also end of March this year, China Central Television reported that Beijing City wants to promote tourism. Difficulties with transportation and payments to be solved completely. The article also mentioned that Beijing airports should be handling Yikatongs for foreigners.
To solve the transportation problems for foreigners, all of sales points of Yikatong should be selling cards for foreigners after checking passports.
QR code methods should be also available for foreigners, but it will be troublesome also for the elderly. Yikatong like cards with China T Union logo are easier to use after topping up plentifully. QR code method requires registering every time crossing city borders.
When China says something, the actual reality could be different. Seeing for yourself is essential.
China needs to promote tourism for economical purposes. It will be matter of time Yikatong related problems to be settled.
