About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Chengdu

visiting Chengdu and flying out of Shanghai

Hi,

We are Uk citizens, we will be in the Philippines next month, we then have an international flight departing from Shanghai back to the UK in February, so we need to fly from Manila to China. We would like to visit the pandas in Chengdu on the way back. Can we fly into Chengdu, then transit to Shanghai for our departure flight the next day?

Is there a way of doing this visa free? or do we have to fly in and out of teh same city without leaving it?

Thank you

Unfortunately, you are allowed just to stay within one transit area. In other words, if your original itinerary is:

Manila - Shanghai - UK

You are then eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai transit area only. You cannot take a flight from Shanghai to Chengdu because for something like this you would have need a Chinese visa obtained in advance.

There is one a bit complicated option and that options could look like this:

Manila - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Chengdu - Macau - Shanghai - UK

However, I am more than certain that you will find this option too complicated.
