Can I travel by train to Hong Kong from Shanghai if I enter Shanghai with the 144 hour visa free

Can I travel by train to Hong Kong from Shanghai if I enter Shanghai with the 144 hour visa free travel? I will be traveling from the USA (LAX) to Shanghai (PVG) and plan to spend 5 days in Shanghai and then travel to Hong Kong. I have a US passport.

No, unfortunately, this is not possible any more. It was possible in the past when a night train was in operation. Today only high speed trains operate on the route and they are not eligible for this visa free transit scheme. In other words, you will have to fly from Shanghai to Hong Kong in order to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area.

Thanks for your reply. I am curious, what is the expectation to arrive or depart from Shanghai railway station? What region or country can someone arrive from or depart to from Shanghai railway station using the 144-hour visa free travel? Thanks.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use any kind of train to any destination from/to Shanghai railway station using 144 hour visa free transit scheme. It used to be possible to travel to Hong Kong, but this is now a distant past. I'm sorry.
