About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 visa free confirmation

I am a U.S. citizen traveling from New York to Hong Kong for 2 days and then to Shanghai for 4 days. I will be attending an exhibition for business in Shanghai. I will be going back to New York with a connecting flight in Hong Kong for about 2 hours. Do I need to apply for a Visa or do I qualify for the 144 hour rule?

So your route will be New York - HK - Shanghai - HK -New York. It is not eligible for 144-hour visa free transit, because HK - Shanghai - HK is a return trip, not a transit.

However, you can make your entire journey perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

You can take a flight from nearby Macau to Shanghai and then return to Hong Kong.

If you do this, you do not need any kind of visa and you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area.
