About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Does my itinerary below meet the 144-hour visa-free transit policy?

Hi
I am an Australian citizen and living in Sydney, Australia. I am planning a trip in November 2023. Here is my itinerary:
1. Flight from Sydney to Guangzhou (I have 3 options: 1. via Cathay Pacific Airways and 1 stop in Hong Kong. 2. via Singapore Airlines and 1 stop in Singapore. 3. Via China Southern Airlines and direct to Guangzhou). For those flights with stops, the stops are 2 to 5 hours and I shall not leave the respective airports during my stop. Upon arrival, I shall stay in Guangzhou for 5 or 6 days.
2. Guangzhou to Hong Kong via high-speed train. I shall stay in Hong Kong for 5 or 6 days.
3. Flight from Hong Kong to Sydney.
I am aware of the 144-hour visa-free transit policy and I want to enter Guangzhou as my first stay. I satisfy other requirements (such as residency, passport validity period, stay in 1 province: Guangdong). However, I have the following questions whether my itinerary meets the rest of the requirements of this 144-hour visa-free transit policy:
1. For my flight from Sydney to Guangzhou, must it be a direct flight or can my flight stop in somewhere else before I arrive in Guangzhou?
2. For my trip from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, can I travel by train or I have to take a flight or other modes of transport to satisfy this policy’s requirement?
Thanks.

1. Option 1 is not eligible for the 144-hour visa free transit, for it will be HK - Guangzhou - HK, a return trip not a transit. Option 2 Singapore - Guangzhou - HK and option 3 Sydeney - Guangzhou - HK are both eligible.
2. To be eligible, you cannot travel by high speed train. Both ferry and flight are fine. Ferry is recommended because it costs much less. Just remember you should have the ferry ticket in hand when landing in Guangzhou.

Thanks Rita for your reply. There are 32 exit ports to leave Guangdong Province and Guangzhou East Railway Station (Tianhe Port) is one of them. If I take a train from this Guangzhou East Station to Hong Kong, will it be eligible for this policy? Please update me if my understanding is incorrect.

Yes, the route will be eligible if you take a train from Guangzhou East Railway Station. But the problem is the train from Guangzhou East to HK is out of service. That's why I recommend ferry.
