The only way how to become eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Guangdong province is by taking a flight to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Jieyang Chaoshan airports. Since the only available flight is from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, you are suggested to take one. Also, before you take this flight, you should book your flight to Malaysia. In this way, you will have an eligible itinerary:
Hong Kong - Guangzhou - Malaysia
This itinerary allows you to stay and travel within the entire Guangdong province absolutely visa free for 6 days.
The only alternative to this option is Shenzhen visa on arrival. You can take a ferry from Macau to Shekou port in Shenzhen and apply there for Shenzhen 5 days visa on arrival. It costs 314 CNY for UK citizens. Please, be aware of the opening hours of Shekou visa office: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30.
Also, you should know that by taking a Shenzhen visa, you are limited to just Shenzhen city limits. You can take a flight from Shenzhen to Malaysia on a nonstop flight, but you cannot take a flight from Guangzhou.
