Mark, you are eligible for Shenzhen VOA that costs 314 CNY for UK citizens. Beside your passport you do not need anything, although if you have a booking accommodation confirmation, you can bring it with you just to answer the question where will you stay. If there will be such a question at all.

One important detail. Recent reports show that the pressure on visa offices is very high and the waiting hours to obtain a visa are long. So, I would suggest you to use a ferry (catamaran) from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen instead of taking overland border crossings. I cannot guarantee that the waiting time in Shekou will be short, but it will be definitely shorter than in overland border crossings. If you decide to take a ferry, just have in mind the opening hours of Shekou visa office: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30.
