About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK to Guangzhou to Bangkok

Hi there, me (british citizenship) and my mum (indian citizenship) want to travel to Bangkok using china airline, but the layover in Guangzhou will be 16hrs. When I arrive, do I just say I want a 24hr free visa to explore Guangzhou or do I need to do an application before hand? Also is there an issue with my mother since shes Indian?

There are no issues at all. Both of you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit since your entire transit time within mainland China will be less than 24 hours. So, both of you do not need any kind of visa.

Upon your arrival at Guangzhou airport, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit desk where you will apply for a temporary entry permit for free. This is a permit and not a visa, usually issued to those passengers who have long layovers like yours. You have to be aware that the issuing of temporary entry permit depends on sole discretion of airport officials and is not a right of a passenger traveling on 24 hour visa free transit. Hopefully, those responsible will be reasonable and grant you the permit to allow you to explore the city or even to have a rest in the hotel if your layover is during the night hours.

Also, you do not need any application, but you will apply for the mentioned permit when you arrive at Guangzhou airport.
