About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

transit through Beijing/Shanghai from EU to Taipei for US citizens

I plan to fly from Austria/Germany to Taipei through Beijing and/or Shanghai. In each case, the time in transit will be less than 24 hours. Do I need a Chinese visa? Do I need a Chinese visa if I stay less than 72 hours? Many thanks.

If you intend to travel:

Austria/Germany - Beijing - Shanghai - Taipei

You can do it without a visa, but you have to perform your transit within 24 hours frame, i.e. from landing in Beijing, until departure from Shanghai. This is a good example of how 24 hours visa free transit functions.

Quite the contrary, if your transit time exceeds 24 hours, you need a visa.

To be able to stay longer in China during your transit, you can enjoy 144 hours visa free transit on such a route, but then such a route is limited to just one Chinese area, being it Beijing or Shanghai. Not both of them!
