Apply for a temp. permit on site

I am planing to study in a 1year chinnese course but I would like to spend a couple of months there before I start the course. The X1 Visa only let me stay for 30 days.

Do I need a mandatory X1 visa to exchange it into a residence permit for studies?
Can I apply for this residence permit with a Tourism Visa? I would do it personally in the university.

Do you have any suggestions for my plan?

Thank you so much.

Yes, if you want to get residence permit, you have to get an X1 visa and then apply for the residence permit within 30 days after you arrive in China. You can't apply for it with a tourist visa.
