About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

HK/Shanghai/Tokyo

We are two USA passport holders travelling from Hong Kong to Shanghai to visit Shanghai Disney for 4 days and will leave to Tokyo. No other stoos or layovers in China. Are we eligible for the 144 hour visa?

Yes (although the correct term is 144-hour visa free transit).

Thank you for your reply and for clarifying the term 144 hour Visa-free transit.
This information helps a lot with our travel planning!
I have another question please. If for some reason our flight is changed by the airline and includes a connection in another city in China, and we DO NOT leave the airport and simply connect to our next flight, does the 144 hour visa-free transit still apply and remain valid
in Shanghai?
I am asking because sometimes airlines change their flights which is out of my control and I want to be best informed about unknown circumstances.
Thank you.

That will render you ineligible for visa-free transit even if you don't intend to leave the airport (since you will be clearing immigration at your first port of arrival, and visa-free transit requires you to clear immigration at Shanghai only). In that case you can contact your airline for a refund but you won't be allowed to board. Regardless, I would not plan any travel at this point until all scheduled flights have resumed.
