What can I provide instead of a round trip ticket?

I am still in Sydney and leaving for Japan in February. At some stage in Japan I intend to travel from Osaka to Shanghai by ferry to take the train from Shanghai to Hanoi, Vietnam but I have not booked yet. For my China visa what documents can I provide if I don't have a round trip ticket/ hotel accommodation? Francine

If you don't have other layovers in China, you may be eligible for the 144h visa-free transit in Shanghai. If you really need to apply for a visa, you have to provide round-trip tickets and hotel booking.
