I am flying from usa to and from Shanghai to get on a 7 night cruise ship to Japan .i assume no visa

1) USA to Shanghai - i will stay 1 night in Shanghai hotel, then to cruise ship
2) After 7 nights cruise to Japan I return to Shanghai and leave the same day back to USA
Do i need a visa for either stop in Shanghai? Each stop is less than 72 hours.
