Visa on Arrival for Vietnam - Still Eligible for 72 hrs in Beijing?

Hi,

I am traveling to Vietnam, but don't have my visa yet. I am planning to do a visa on arrival (which requires an approved letter), but my Vietnamese Visa letter won't come through until I'm already in China. Do you know if it will be possible for me to enter Beijing on a 72 hour free visa without my letter of approval from Vietnam (my final destination)?

No, you will not be allowed to board the plane in US at the first place and if you manage to do it, you will be returned back to your origin point by the Chinese immigration because you will not have a proof of your unobstructed entry in Vietnam.

If you have already booked your flights to Vietnam and your ticket is non refundable, probably the only option you have is to to book a return flight from Beijing to Hong Kong, but keep in mind that you will have to receive an approval letter for your Vietnamese visa before you depart toward Beijing. So, your itinerary could look like:

US - Beijing - Hong Kong

Your approval letter has arrived

Hong Kong - Beijing - Vietnam

I understand that this "side" trip will increase the costs of your entire trip, but this will be definitely inevitable.

By the way, 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Beijing by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.

Well, I can see that you have an additional problem within your itinerary that is already answered by CDKing in your post below this one. So, we have to adapt slightly my suggestion.

You will have to book your return ticket Beijing - Hong Kong - Beijing, but you will have to be very careful when doing this.

In other words, your flight from Hong Kong to Beijing has to arrive in Beijing to allow you that you leave China within 24 hours after your flight from Hong Kong arrives in Beijing.

In other words, if your departure from Shenzhen is at 19:00 (7:00pm), your flight from Hong Kong can arrive in Beijing not before 19:05 (7:05pm) on the previous day.

Like this, you will be perfectly within 24 hour visa free transit as mentioned by CDKing and hopefully, you will receive your approval letter before your departure from Hong Kong to Beijing.
