Travel from USA- Guangzhou- Singapore

Good Day,
I am a United States citizen traveling from the US with a 17 hour layover in CAN- Guangzhou then off to Singapore. I will arrive in the afternoon and would like to explore Guangzhou after hotel check in with china southern airlines free accommodation. Return flight is SIN-DOH-USA.

Am i eligible for visa free entry and if so what visa category would i be considered? I am getting mixed information about 24/72/144 hour visa and would greatly appreciate a response. Also can you explain registering with the police department? Thanks! Best Regards, -L

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.

You will print out your flight tickets and your accommodation bookings with China Southern and bring those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in US that you will travel to Singapore via Guangzhou using 24 hour visa free transit. You will also check at this moment whether your luggage will be tagged all the way to Singapore.

Upon arrival in Guangzhou, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport and to have a decent sleep in the hotel provided by China Southern. To conclude, you don't belong in any visa category because you will travel absolutely without a visa based on 24 hour visa free transit. Also, a temporary entry permit that you will be granted in Guangzhou is not a visa, but a permit to exit the airport until departure of your onward flight out of Guangzhou.
