About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Extend stay after entering with 144 hour travel visa

Is it possible to amend the 144 hour transit visa into a regular tourist visa after entering Kunming or Chengdu by going to a government office or a using a local travel agency?
There are places I would like to visit that are outside of the administrative zone allowed by this visa.

144 hour transit is a not an actual visa but a transit without visa. Sorry you can't apply for a visa within China. If you apply before your trip and have USA passport you can get a 10 year multiple entry tourist (L) visa.
