24 hours visa or 144 hours

My flight arrives at 00:35 from Tokyo (with ANA) and my connecting flight is at 10:10 to Vienna (with Austrian Airlines)

I would like to leave the airport and stay at the nearby hotel for a few hours. I have a British passport so which visa should I apply for ? The 144 hour visa seems to be easier as it can be done online before arrival but just want to make sure I get the right visa.

It appears that I would need to collect my luggage and recheck again.

Thank you

Actually, you are perfectly eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. By the way, this is not a visa, but a travel through China without a visa. You cannot use 144 hour visa free transit because your entire transit time is less than 24 hours.

You will print your flight tickets and bring those printouts with you. You will also book your accommodation and print out your accommodation booking confirmation.

Also, you will declare at check-in in Tokyo that you will travel to Vienna via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection, you will be allowed to board the plane. Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit free of charge. You will be granted one and after that you will collect your luggage, depart for your accommodation for a few hours of decent sleep and after that return to make a check-in and to proceed to Vienna.
