About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

flying to Vietnam (via Shanghai), 3 days there (out) and 2 days (back). Do I need a visa?

Flying to Vietnam to and from Shanghai, spending three days in Shanghai (out) and two days (return). Total trip is 15 days. Do I need a visa?

As long as you only transit a single Chinese city To and from Vietnam then you can do two separate visa free transits. Its fine to do to the destination and then a second one on the way home. Each transit is evaluated separately.
