About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Manila - Guangzhou - Hong Kong

Hello,
We are planning to fly from Manila to Guangzhou, staying there max 5 days, and then taking our flight back to Europe from Hong Kong. As we will arrive by flight directly from Manila to Guangzhou, is it possible with the 144h transit visa to leave Guangzhou by train to Hong Kong? The problem is that I can't really find a solution to book this train online in advance, but before Manila, we will stay already few days in Hong Kong, do you know if it's possible to buy in Hong Kong's train station the ticket for Guangzhou-Hong Kong train (so then later when we take the Manila-Guangzhou flight, we can already show those tickets). Thank you a lot!

Hi Zupan,

Thank you for your answer. Meanwhile, after many tries, I reached by phone the Chinese Embassy of Budapest... and the lady however, not too confidently, but told me that I have to enter and exit Guangzhou by plane... I tried many other offices/embassy to call, without success... so I really don't know what to do now... I found many websites, claiming the same as you did, that yes, from Guangzhou is possible to exit with other ways than plane... but so far I didn't get any official places, where this is written.

Thank You
Gergo

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Anyway, I don't recommend a train and you are also not allowed to book a ticket for that train while in Hong Kong because there will be not your name written on it.

I definitely recommend that you take a ferry from both Shenzhen Shekou port or Guangzhou Nansha port. Those are catamarans in reality. You will visit CKS - Chu Kong Passenger transport website where you will book your ticket. You will receive an e-confirmation that you will print out and keep that printout with you.

You will declare at check-in in Manila that you will travel to Hong Kong via Guangzhou using 144 hour visa free transit and you will present your flight and a ferry ticket.

Upon arrival in Guangzhou, you will approach 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will fill out the blue form. Shortly after you will be allowed to exit the airport. You are allowed to travel throughout the entire Guangdong province.

You will leave Guangdong province by ferry (or train if you decide, but before departure from Manila) that you have bought your tickets for.

If you decide that you prefer a train, I will explain how to book a ticket.

Part one:

There are literally thousands who have successfully exited Guangdong province to Hong Kong or Macau overland or using the ferries within their 144 hour visa free transit itinerary.

Of course, it was the easiest option for the lady you have spoken with to tell you what is really the easiest option in her eyes. Indeed, you can take a plane from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. Anyway, this is by far the most expensive and even not the most practical option because when you take into account the entire time needed for all the formalities that a flight requires, a ferry or a train are really noticeably faster.

I invite you to visit Timatic kindly offered by Air New Zealand website for use for all visitors of their website. Part two:

"Visa required, except for Nationals of Hungary with a

confirmed onward air, cruise or train ticket to a third

country within 144 hours, starting from 00:01 on the day

following the day of entry. They must:
- arrive at one of the following airports: Guangzhou (CAN),
Shantou (SWA) or Shenzhen (SZX); and
- depart from one of the following locations: Guangzhou (CAN),

Meixian (MXZ), Shantou (SWA), Shenzhen (SZX), Zhanjiang (ZHA),
Dongguan Humen Sea Port, Dongguan Railway Port, Doumen Sea
Port, Foshan Gaoming Sea Port, Foshan Railway Port, Guangzhou
Sea Port, Guangzhou Tianhe Railway Port, Heshan Sea Port,
Jiuzhou Sea Port, Jiangmen Sea Port, Lianhuashan Sea Port,
Nansha Sea Port, Rongqi Sea Port, Shekou Sea Port, Shenzhen
Airport Support Sea Port, Shenzhen Bay Port, Shenzhen Futian

Port, Shenzhen Huanggang Port, Shenzhen Luohu Port, Shenzhen
Shatoujiao Port, Shenzhen Wenjindu Port, Wanchai Sea Port,
Wanshan Sea Port, Zhaoqing Railway Port, Zhongshan Sea Port,
Zhuhai Gongbei Port or Zhuhai Hengqin Port; and
- have documents required for the next destination."

As you can see, this is the detail that will the Philippine airport staff read when you tell them that you will travel to Hong Kong via Guangzhou and, for example, Shekou port in Shenzhen.

You can do this and now when you know this, you will decide for yourself.
