About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel Zurich to Manila via Shanghai Airport

I have a Philippine Passport and booked a flight from Zurich to Manila via Shanghai Airport.

On the way to Manila we have an 8 hours stay in Shanghai, on the way back a 19 hours stay before departure of connecting flight.

Can I get a free 24 hours transit visa? Do I need to request it before the trip or on arrival?

Winnie, your itinerary and your transit will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Upon your landing in Shanghai you have two options. In other words, if you do not intend to exit the airport, you will just walk from one to the other gate and you do not need to perform any formality nor to fill out any form. Also, you will not be a subject of immigration and customs inspections. However if you want to exit the airport in that case the first thing that you will do upon landing in Shanghai will be to approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight itinerary and your hotel booking accommodation if you plan to have a hotel stay. This application is free of any charge. In any case, it is important to understand the fact that the issuing of the temporary entry permit is not a passenger's right, but a bonus that is offered based on discretionary decision by Chinese immigration authorities to those with long layovers, disabled passengers and those with small children. In any case, you should try and hopefully it will be resolved in your favor, although you can expect both outcomes. In the case of the negative outcome, you will just wait for your next flight in the transit zone of Shanghai airport. I advise you not to apply for the said permit during your 8 hours long layover, but I do recommend that you apply for your 19 hours long one. Also, I encourage you to use correct terminology because it is not 24 hour transit visa, but 24 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind at all. Also, you do not need to apply for anything before your flight. I wish you a pleasant journey.

Thank you very much for your advise.

On both flights we will need to receive our luggage and check it in again „manually“ to the connecting flight. There is no luggage transfer from one flight to the other. How can this be arranged without temporarily entering China?

Winnie, based on this fact you have provided right now, I can just confirm that the temporary entry permits will be definitely and undoubtedly granted to you because having a temporary entry permit is a prerequisite to cross the immigration. You should not worry at all because those permits will be granted to you as soon as they see your travel itinerary and the fact that you will have to collect your luggage and to perform new check-in. Just be relaxed because you have layovers long enough to perform all the formalities. Enjoy your journeys.
