James, you have posted just a portion of your post. OK, I understand that you intend to fly to Shanghai for just three days/two overnights. This is fine and you can be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, but under the following conditions:

- You flight to Shanghai from, I assume, UK should not have any other stop within mainland China. In other words, it has to be a nonstop flight from UK to Shanghai.
- After your planned stay in Shanghai, your flight out of Shanghai has to take you out of China completely, but to the country different than UK. It can be Germany or France, but also a countries or territories close to mainland China like South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan or similar. Simply speaking, you cannot return immediately to UK, but it has to be via some other country or territory.

By the way, 72 hour visa free transit in Shanghai has been replaced by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago and this is not a visa, but visa free transit. There is no visa at all.
